Ingredients

  • 230g frozen oven fries or homemade potato wedges
  • 160g lean beef mince
  • 1 red onion, diced
  • ¾ red pepper, sliced
  • ½ x 85g tin baked beans, lower-salt if possible
  • 120g passata or mild chilli sauce
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 30g cheddar, grated
  • ½ tomato, diced
  • ¾ spring onion, finely sliced
  • 4g coriander, chopped
  • 40g frozen peas, cooked, instead of sweetcorn

Method

  1. Cook fries or wedges according to packet, or bake homemade wedges until soft inside.
  2. Meanwhile, brown the beef mince in a pan for 6–8 minutes.
  3. Add onion and peppers. Cook for 5–7 minutes until soft.
  4. Remove a baby-safe portion of beef and soft veg before adding chilli sauce or salty beans, if needed.
  5. Add baked beans, passata or mild chilli sauce, cumin and paprika. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until thick.
  6. Mix tomatoes, spring onions, coriander and cooked peas for the fresh topping.
  7. Spoon chilli over fries. Add cheddar and return to the oven for 3–5 minutes until melted.
  8. Add fresh tomato topping to adult/toddler portions.

Storage and reheating

Cool leftovers quickly and refrigerate within 2 hours. Use within 48 hours or freeze. Reheat cooked meat, beans and sauces until steaming hot throughout, and only reheat once. For babies, remove portions before adding salty cheese, chilli paste, chilli sauce, ketchup, salsa or adult sauces. Squash beans and peas, break mince up finely, and keep potato and tortilla textures soft.

Safety and substitutions

This is the saltiest meal of the two sets, so babies portion must be separated early. Avoid crisp fries for babies; use soft potato flesh. Peas should be squashed.
