BBQ Beef Burgers with Soft Wedges
BBQ Beef Burgers with Soft Wedges — 40 mins family dinner · Summer BBQ set · Meat protein. Part of a three-meal shopping base with household scaling. 15 mins…
Ingredients
- 190g lean beef mince, turkey mince or chicken mince
- 16g breadcrumbs or oats
- 1 egg, optional, if already tolerated
- 1 small carrot, finely grated
- ½ tsp mild paprika
- ½ tsp dried mixed herbs
- 1.5 burger buns
- 1¾ potatoes, cut into wedges
- 1 tbsp rapeseed or olive oil
- 1 cucumber, cut into sticks
- ¾ tomato, sliced or diced
- 40g plain yoghurt
Method
- Heat oven to 200°C / 180°C fan if cooking wedges indoors. Toss potato wedges with oil and bake for 30–35 minutes, turning once, until soft inside.
- Mix mince, breadcrumbs or oats, egg if using, grated carrot, paprika and herbs. Do not add salt yet.
- Shape into 2 adult burgers, 1 smaller toddler burger, and 1 small baby patty. If there is extra mixture, make another small patty for leftovers or an adult second helping.
- BBQ over medium heat, or cook in a frying pan, until fully cooked through. For minced meat, there should be no pink in the centre and juices should run clear.
- Remove babies patty before adding adult salt, cheese or sauces.
- Toast buns briefly if wanted.
- Serve adult burgers in buns with tomato, cucumber and yoghurt or sauces. Serve the toddler burger cut into manageable pieces.
Storage and reheating
Tabbouleh is best eaten fresh. Cool cooked meat quickly and refrigerate within 2 hours. Use within 48 hours or freeze uncooked burger patties. Reheat cooked meat only once until steaming hot throughout. For babies, remove portions before adding honey, feta, Cajun fillets, salty cheese, sauces, chilli or added salt. Squash chickpeas if using, break burger patty into tiny soft pieces, shred chicken finely, and keep potato and pitta textures soft.
Safety and substitutions
For babies, the burger must be fully cooked, soft and broken up. Avoid chewy burger pieces, whole cherry tomatoes, raw hard carrot, sauces, pickles, salty cheese and ketchup. For the toddler, cut tomatoes safely and avoid making the burger too thick or hard to bite.
